The posh bottles of wine so exclusive that you can’t just go out and buy

Fortune included Chateau Montelena in a story about exclusive, collectible wines that aren’t readily available to purchase at retail stores.

In fact, the writer says, “If you dream of helping yourself to historic vintages while roaming an iconic Napa winery’s cellar, you’re in luck. Head for ivy-covered, stone castle-style Chateau Montelena in Napa. (Sorry, its 1973 chardonnay, one of the 1976 Paris Tasting winners, is out of bounds—and probably over-the-hill, anyway.) Still, the library stash includes almost every vintage of its reds and whites, back to the 1970s. Access comes through curated tastings in a new concierge program, starting at $250.”

And as they say, the rest is history.

In 1976 Chateau Montelena put California at the forefront of the wine world. That year a who's-who of the French wine establishment gathered in Paris for a blind tasting of French and American wines. When the scores were tallied, the top-ranking white wine was Chateau Montelena's 1973 Chardonnay. Montelena today continues to be a quality benchmark in Napa Valley, producing some of the finest Cabernet and Chardonnay in California.
