Vieilles Vignes Françaises is one of Champagne’s most mythical cuvees, produced from miraculously preserved and ungrafted 100% Pinot Noir vines. Phylloxera destroyed the vines of Champagne in the early 20^th century, but amazingly enough two of Bollinger’s classified Grands crus plots, Chaudes Terres and Clos St. Jacques, survived and are still grown the traditional way. Madame Lily Bollinger first had this wine produced in 1969 as an anniversary cuvee to commemorate her 70th birthday. Following the wine’s launch in 1974, Vieilles Vignes Françaises promptly became a collectible and a symbol of a bygone era. Over the decades, its uniqueness and scarcity have made it one of the most sought-after and expensive Champagnes.

This incredible Pinot Noir from Lynmar’s sustainably farmed Quail Hill Estate vineyard blends a selection of over 15 clones, resulting in a wine of incredible depth and nuance.

Mounir Saouma’s story in the Chateauneuf-du-Pape started with a state sale of a small plot in Pignan, one of the most famous vineyard areas of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Within this first vineyard acquisition, Mounir has one plot of 100% Grenache planted in the 1930s which yields naturally at a miniscule 1 ton per acre. From these vines he produces Arioso.

In the northeast of the appellation facing “the giant of Provence”, the massive Mont Ventoux mountain”, Pignan’s exposure brings freshness to the natural high ripeness achieved in this area. The rocky and sandy soils of this original plot add a sense of elegance. When you start tasting you understand why some have compared his wines to the great Rayas wines of the 1980s or, perhaps as expected given Mounir’s renown as owner and winemaker of Lucien Le Moine, to Burgundy. The sheer density of the low yielding, old vines dances with the freshness and elegance provided by the site. On the label is aptly explained: “Arioso is a style of opera somewhere between an aria and a recital. We chose this name for our wine because it is evocative of both the ethereal and profound”.

This incredible Chardonnay from some of the oldest vines on Lynmar’s Quail Hill Estate is emblematic of the very best aromatics, minerality, finesse, and depth that the Russian River Valley has to offer. 

Mounir Saouma likes to describe Chateauneuf-du-Pape as a mosaic, with all the wild traditions and differences together making for very different interpretations. Omnia, Latin for “all,” is his attempt to encompass the entire region’s terroir and winemaking history (and perhaps future) in one glass. The fruit comes from 9 vineyard parcles across all 5 of the Chateauneuf communes, Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Courthezon, Sorgues, Bedarrides and Orange (in early vintages, when the Saoumas did not have all the vineyards they have today, they would purchase fruit; today, Rotem & Mounir Saouma is 100% Estate). The wine is then vinified and aged in foudres, cement and 500 liter barrels – a little bit of everything.

The aging is as Mounir ages his Burgundies: extremely long, never racked, no fining, no filtration. It would be easy to say that we expected the experience running one of Burgundy’s leading producers, Lucien Le Moine, would show in Mounir’s wines. But the actual results need to be tasted to be believed and understood: a wine with beguiling fruit and savory richness, yet extraordinary finesse and detail.

This classic representation of Russian River Chardonnay from Lynmar features a selection of clones, each vinified separately and blended together, that show the range of flavors and textures that can be achieved in this climate. 

Zinfandel is California’s heritage grape, and as anyone who has tasted long-lived examples from the 1970s, it can produce wines of tremendous quality, both immediate pleasure and age-worthiness, and all in a rich and spicy berry profile that is unique in the world of wine. Like every wine they produce, Montelena looks first and foremost to take the tremendous fruit they work with and transmit it in a complex, balanced package.

Jim Barrett’s dream of Chateau Montelena was that this wine, their flagship Cabernet Sauvignon, achieve the balance and complexity of flavors, aromas and textures to be considered among the great examples of Cabernet in the world. Almost since his first vintages in the 1970s, this wine has been a show-stopper that has everything in place, while revealing the majesty and distinctive character of the estate vineyard site in the northern Napa area that the Barretts led to recognition as its own appellation, Calistoga.

Heartland Shiraz is an elegant and pure expression of one of Australia’s most iconic varieties. The Langhorne creek climate and the sandy loam soils make for a Shiraz that is savory, rich and yet balanced and restrained.

Basa is one of the pioneering wines to show the expression of a grape variety, the “Verdejo” that adapted to a continental climate, giving rise to a direct, fresh and expressive wine.  This refreshing blend of the native varieties Verdejo and Viura from Rueda has year after year been named one of Spain’s and the word’s value white wines. The intense floral aromatics, freshness and wonderful texture are the result of the high elevation plantings in lime and gravel soils, with good drainage. The wine derives its name from its red counterpart Baso, itself named after the country’s ancient “baso” (gobelet)-shaped bushvines.

G.A.M. represents the first initial of each of Frank Mitolo children’s first names – Gemma, Alex and Marco – and G.A.M. was the first and remains the flagship wine of the estate. A Shiraz that embodies the Mitolo credo: strong and gentle. Uncompromising intensity and depth, supple complexity of fruit and savory flavors.

Mozaik brings together the two great terroirs of Anjou: dark schist and bright limestone. From the region of Montreuil Bellay, the Chenin Blanc is also farmed biodynamically. Fermentation takes place is large, old wooden casks, where the wine ages for about a year before being released. There is a purity to the wine that will appeal to lovers of low-intervention offerings from the Loire Valley, and a real sense of terroir shines through. Peaches and apples are joined by notes of honeysuckle and chalky minerality. This is a very different expression than Baumard’s Savennieres, but a fitting and worthy companion in the portfolio.
