Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva Ca’ Florian 2013

Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva DOCG

Amarone Riserva “Ca ‘Florian” is made with selected grapes from one of the oldest vineyards owned by the Tommasi family, with vines averaging 30 years. This “Cru” or “Climat,“ as one would say in Burgundy, is characterized by its “simplicity and elegance,” with notes of cherry and typical black cherries of the valley of Marano, but also the sweet spices and greater structure and elegance common to the Valley of Negrar, which give it the ability to age for the long term.

Vineyard

The Ca’ Florian vineyard is a 12 acre parcel that lies on the Pedemonte hills surrouding the winery in San Pietro in Cariano, and has a south-western exposure. It is a terraced vineyard whose vines are trained using the traditional pergola veronese system. The soils are mostly cretaceous and calcareous.

Winemaking

After harvesting and manual selection, the grapes are laid down in boxes of 5 to 6 kg and naturally dried in the fruttaio for 4 months. They are gently pressed the following January and slowly fermented on the skins using indigenous yeasts, a process lasting about 30 days. The wine is aged first in tonneau for one year and then for 3 years in Slavonian casks. It then sees one additional year of bottle aging. The 2013 vintage is a blend of 75% Corvina, 20% Corvinone, and 15% Rondinella.

Tasting Note

A deep ruby red with garnet highlights, on the nose it displays an elegant and very complex bouquet, with notes of ripe red fruits (cherries, blackberries and plums) along with spicy nuances of licorice and bitter cocoa. It is full-bodied and austere on the palate, with rich tannins and a very long, splendidly fresh finish.

Food Pairing

Perfect with braised meats, stews, game. Ideal with grilled red meat and cheese. An excellent meditation wine.

Reviews

"Tannins slowly saturate"

Vinous - April 18, 2022 Masses of crushed cherries, dried florals, cinnamon, clove and stone dust creates a seductive bouquet as the 2013 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva Ca' Florian blossoms in the glass. It’s velvety and elegant with masses of dark red fruits and inner spice complicated by intense minerality and fine tannins that slowly saturate. It leaves lavender, licorice and dark, dark chocolate through the finale. This is structured and cool-toned. Wow, the 2013 is an intense Ca' Florian for the cellar.

"Dark chocolate and spiced almond"

Wine & Spirits - February 10, 2023 "Deeply concentrated flavors of dried cherry and plum are enriched by notes of dark chocolate and spiced almond. The grippy tannins would match well with roasted pork shoulder." -S.J 2/23

"Anise, prune and black tea"

Wine Enthusiast - June 27, 2023 "The Ca’ Florian comes from the estate’s oldest vineyards in the heart of the region. The wine opens with dried black cherries that have been dusted with sweet and savory spices, roasted herbs and turned earth. The palate is detailed and elegant, with notes of worn leather, clove, anise, prune and black tea. Gentle yet present tannins frame the wine to give it strength without heft. " -J.P 6/23

"Silky"

Wine Spectator - August 2, 2023 "Round and silky, showing chewy tannins that are well-meshed with flavors of pureed black cherry, candied violet, eucalyptus and medicinal herbs, with a subtle thread of sweet smoke. Juicy, with a lingering, spiced finish. Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella." -A.N 8/23
