Inkwell, Towns Wine Co.’s first release, is a limited run of high-quality Pinot Noir from Overberg, South Africa. The wine expresses the unique site of Overberg with its shale-derived, clay-rich soils adding minerality and complexity in the final product. It is produced by a vineyard manager and cellar assistant from the highly lauded winery of Hamilton Russell.
Vineyard
Overberg is a region in South Africa to the east of Cape Town. It is in the Western Cape province and is known for its diverse landscapes, picturesque coastlines, fertile farmlands, and charming towns. The region’s climate is characterized by mild, wet winters and warm, dry summers. Soils range from shale and sandstone to clay and gravel, providing unique growing conditions for different grape varieties. The varying altitudes and exposures also contribute to the diversity of wine styles produced in the region.
Winemaking
Made from 100% Pinot Noir, the wine saw 10 months in 10% new and 20% second pass French Oak.
Vintage
The 2022 vintage was cool, with even budding and beautiful phenolic ripeness.
Tasting Note
A refreshing minerality runs through this Pinot Noir, complemented by a lively red fruited character of wild strawberries and raspberries alongside a loamy, dewy profile. Firm yet silky tannins encapsulate a refreshing acidity.
